OPENAI SAYS IT SOLVED A $1M MATH PROBLEM. THE MATH WORLD'S NOT SO SURE.

OpenAI says an internal model (stronger than GPT-6 Astra) resolved Navier-Stokes, a $1M Millennium Prize problem. The method: agents split into groups, each working a different version of the proof, until one group landed it.

The timing is what's turning heads. OpenAI says it started after hearing rumors that an Anthropic employee and an NYU professor had cracked a related problem (forced Euler, not Navier-Stokes). It reached out once its proof was done, and both sides agreed to a joint announcement.

It's gotten messier since. NYU's Tristan Buckmaster says his team fed unpublished drafts into OpenAI's Codex, and OpenAI won't confirm if that shaped training. He also alleges OpenAI pushed him to publish without his Anthropic co-author, warning it could hurt his career. OpenAI hasn't responded.

None of this is independently verified. "Resolved" is still OpenAI's word, not the math community's.

That's a new capability, whether or not this specific proof survives peer review.

The Buckmaster allegations are the bigger problem. Unpublished drafts feeding a competitor's model, then that same company pressuring the author to publish solo, isn't a rivalry story anymore.
